Ian shared some excellent panoramas - all shot vertically (with a tripod I believe!) - mostly from Iceland though a bit of Southwold crept in at the end
All these panoramas were, in fact, hand held. I've never bothered with a panoramic head for a tripod, and wouldn't normally have the time to set one up anyway! So long as the camera is held vertically, there's usually enough space to crop top and bottom (although I blew the final Southwold picture by clipping the building on the cliff).
